Horses are naturally protected from the sun's harmful UV rays thanks to their coat and melanin in their skin, which reflects sunlight. Some horses are more sensitive to the sun than others. Most commonly, horses are extra-sensitive where their fur is thin or completely lacking, such as at the ears, muzzle and knee joints. It is also common for horses with light pink skin to burn more easily in the sun. For those horses that react to the sun's rays, sun protection is extra-important.
Using sunscreen for horses is an effective way to protect sensitive skin areas from the harmful effects of the sun. We recommend using sunscreen of natural origin, as some ingredients such as PABA can cause irritation in horses. Spread thoroughly across the exposed areas and repeat application if necessary, especially when a horse drinks or moves, as the sunscreen can be washed off. A sunscreen with a higher fat content usually lasts longer and reduces the risk of it being washed away by water or sweat.
For extra protection, you can also use fly hoods or blankets to protect against strong sunshine. With the right sun protection, you can keep your horse safe and comfortable even on sunny days.
