Sodium and chloride are important for the horse's salt balance, the need increases during work and sweating. Horses' source of salt is via the feed. Forage generally has low levels of sodium and therefore salt needs to be given in the feed, particularly if the horse is losing a lot of fluids in the form of sweat or loose droppings. A lack of sodium can lead to a reduced water intake, which can give rise to a number of problems, including colic. Dosage: 5-10 ml (5-15 g) per 100 kg body weight per day
