Protect Your Horse from Flies and Insects in the Best Way!
After a long and cold winter, it's a relief when summer arrives with sunshine, green grass, and warm evenings. But with the heat also come new challenges, such as mosquitoes, gnats, flies, and other insects that bother horses. Flies, insects, and mosquitoes are not just annoying—they can also cause more serious issues like infected bites or allergic reactions. That's why it's important to protect your horse from summer pests in the best possible way.
Let us help you make summer a season of joy and well-being for both you and your horse!
Keep Insects, Mosquitoes, and Flies Away with Fly Repellents
You can protect your horse from insects, mosquitoes, and flies with different types of fly repellents. There are both sprays and creams designed to combat summer pests. What works best for your horse is individual—if your horse is sensitive to stronger products, there are fly repellents made with essential oils.
The best combination is using both fly spray and fly cream. The spray provides overall coverage, while the cream allows you to target hard-to-reach or more sensitive areas. It’s important not to apply strong products, such as fly spray, near your horse's eyes, mouth, or mucous membranes—use a cream for these sensitive areas instead.
Fly spray, also known as insect spray, is an effective and affordable option, as just a few sprays can provide full coverage against flies and insects. There are many different brands available, and in our range, you’ll find a wide selection of insect sprays to suit your needs.
Unlike fly spray, fly cream is ideal for protecting specific areas of your horse’s body. It’s especially useful around the eyes, muzzle, and groin.

Protect Your Horse’s Eyes, Ears, and Face
It’s not uncommon for horses to develop watery and irritated eyes due to flies, making proper protection essential. Give your horse extra defense against flies and insects by using a fly mask or a fly fringe. A fly mask covers and protects your horse’s face, eyes, and sometimes ears, while a fly fringe acts as an extra forelock, making it easier for your horse to swat away flies and insects.
A fly mask features a protective mesh that keeps insects, mosquitoes, and flies at bay, ensuring your horse stays comfortable while outdoors. The mesh also serves as a shield against strong sunlight, preventing your horse from being dazzled. There are various models of fly masks to meet your horse's needs. If your horse is bothered by insects around its ears, there are masks with ear covers. If your horse is extra sensitive on its nose, there are masks with added nose protection. Some fly masks fasten with Velcro straps for easy adjustment, while others simply slip on. If your horse is prone to chafing, slip-on masks are often a better option as they have fewer seams that could cause irritation.
A fly fringe, also called a fly veil, extends your horse’s forelock and helps them shake off pesky flies more easily. The fly fringe attaches easily to your horse’s halter or bridle.
The Difference Between Fly Rugs & Eczema Rugs
Sometimes fly repellents aren’t enough to keep insects away. In such cases, a fly rug can help protect your horse from insect bites, flies, and gnats. If your horse is particularly sensitive to summer pests or suffers from sweet itch or sun allergies, an eczema rug with UV protection can be a great solution.
The main difference between a fly rug and an eczema rug is that the latter is made of thicker fabric, offering additional protection against UV rays and bothersome insects.
